The Sarasin Group's 2011 carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are being offset by a wind energy project about 90 km north of Shenyang in Kanping county, Liaoning province in northeast China. Last year the Sarasin Group was responsible for CO2 emissions of just over 4,000 tonnes. The Liaoning Kangping Furaoshan Wind Power Project consists of 66 wind turbines with an annual average power generation of 97,486 megawatt hours (MWh). This reduces carbon emissions by replacing fossil fuel-fired power plants connected into Northeast China Power Grid.
The Sarasin Group has been carbon-neutral since 2008. CO2 emissions which are either unavoidable or which cannot be reduced any further through environmental protection measures are offset through investments in flagship climate protection projects. These investments are made on behalf of the Sarasin Group by Rabobank, which remains Bank Sarasin & Co. Ltd's majority shareholder until the sale of Rabobank's stake to Safra is completed.
The Liaoning Kangping Furaoshan Wind Power Project is a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project defined in Article 21 of the Kyoto Protocol which was signed under the United Nations Framework Convention for Climage Change (UNFCCC). The UNFCCC is an international treaty signed in 1992 under which countries cooperatively consider what they can do to limit average global temperature increases and the resulting climate change.
